A Visual History of Jaeger's Battalion, 1958 to Present

1 The lower flag is the original Battalion flag from when we simply called ourselves Jaeger’s Rangers. Tim Todishodish made the flag in the mid-late 1960s, and still 58 A young Tim R. Todish models Tim Sr’s original “uniform” that his aunt made for him ca. 1958. It was based heavily on the uniforms in Bradford Smith’s book Rogers’ Rangers and the French and Indian War. The photos were taken in 1986 for the Battalion’s 30th anniversary. 71-6Ordnance Sergeant Dave Behm, Major John Jaeger, and 1st Lieutenant Tim Todish at the Manistee Rendezvous at Manistee, MI, in June, 1971. Dave was the Battalion’s first ordnance officer, ranked as a sergeant, and Tim Todish was adjutant as a1st lieutenant. Tim was promoted to captain when the Illinois and Ohio Companies joined, allowing for the creation of the Battalion in 1974. 74-6a Tim Carlson, Tim Todish, John Jaeger, and Dave Behm wearing their first regimental coats at the Manistee Rendezvous, June 1974. 74-6b Tim live firing at Manistee, June 1974. Note the many instances of fringed frock in the early years, before they knew better. Although their dress would get them laughed out of camp today, they were the most accurately dressed Rangers around back then, and won many costume judging competitions. In competition, they all also shot their custom made Kentucky rifles, although they quickly acquired 2nd Model Besses for reenacting. 74-8 Illinois Company founder and commander Kent Martin, with Barry Lewis and Tim at the Grand Valley Frontier Shoot, Dorr, MI, August 1974. Initially the Battalion company commanders were ranked as ensigns, then later as captain-lieutenants. Barry was “Trooper Barry” back then. He only became “Father Barry” after he retired from the State Police. 74-10a A beautifully staged photo at Fort Ligonier, October 1974. Tim Todish, Kent, and John Jaeger, with Tim C behind Kent. The Indian is Charlie King, who was from the Ligonier area and not a member of the Battalion. 74-10b Tim C and John fire over the wall at Ligonier, October 1974. 75-5 Tim C, Dave, John, Tim and Barry in their first regimentals at the Ft. Michilimackinac Pageant, Mackinaw City, MI, May 1974. 75-7 With early members of the Ohio Company at Ft. LeBoeuf, Waterford, PA, in July, 1975. Mel Backer (OH), Ken (Bob) Howells (Ohio Company founder and commander), Tim Todish, Terry Todish, Jim Owen (OH). 76-7a Ft. LeBoeuf, July 1976. Our deer camp was near Sunrise Lake, near Luther, MI. Tim Todish was sitting in his blind nearby on that crisp, clear morning, and he distinctly remembers hearing three separate sounds: a click as the flint struck the frizzen, then a “woosh” as the priming powder ignited, then a loud “BOOM!” Then there were several minutes of complete silence, and eventually john called out, “Tim, come here–I got one.” We found the buck about 50-60 feet from John’s blind, dropped instantly with one perfect shot to the neck that never touched the meat. 77-9a Tim C and Ken (Bob) Howells on a scout at the Meadowcroft event at Meadowcroft Village, PA in September, 1977. 77-9b John receives orders from Major Bob Frazier of the Ft. Pitt 60th, British commander at the Meadowcroft event in September, 1977. This is one event where we really were used as Rangers. 77-9c Jaeger’s Battalion at Meadowcroft Village, September 1977. Front: Tim Todish, Barry L, Denise Curl-Gallup (the Battalion’s first female sergeant) Rear: Ken, john, and Tim C. 77-9dTim C and Ken scouting for French at Meadowcroft Village, September, 1977. 78-9a John at Meadowcroft, September 1978. 78-9b Tim Todish at Meadowcroft, September 1978. 78-9a Tim C made this map on deerskin of Meadcroft for the 1978 event, which really impressed British commander Bob Frazier. The map really was necessary for us to find our way around the massive and extremely rugged site. Terry, Barry, John, (all of the michigan Company) and Ken, and Larry Konkle (Ohio Company). 78-9d A closeup of Tim C’s deerskin Meadowcroft map. 81-3 Tim Todish (in capote) and Barry (Royal Artillery) at Crompton’s Fort, Clio, MI, for filming of a PBS TV special, March, 1981. 81-5 Tim Todish in the new “Second Model” Battalion regimental coat. This is the pattern that was designed by Tana Shoger (IL Company) based on the consensus of all of the Ranger authorities (including John, Tim C, John Cuneo, George Bray, et al) who met on Rogers’ Island for the famous June 1977 meeting. 81-7 Tim Todish at Ft. Michilimackinac Pageant. Mike Tracy’s parents were founders of both the Pageant and the club, and many Battalion members belong to the club and have served as officers over the years. John Jaeger and Tim Todish designed the flag, and had it professionally made. The design is similar to a French regimental flag, and each of the quadrants represents one of the groups that were important to the history of the Straits region–the Indians, the French, The British, and the Americans. The center represents our club and contains an outline of the fort stockade. 89-6 “Trooper Jaeger” stops by the Dearborn Rendezvous in Dearborn, MI, to inspect his troops, June 1989. 92-5aTodd Harburn, Mike Tracy & Tim Todish at the Ft. Nathan Brittles (John Wayne) in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Terry Todish organized a drive to buy John a watch when he retired from the State Police, and it was presented to him at the party–much to his surprise and embarrassment. 94-5aAl Savage, Bruce Chase (gentleman volunteer) and John Jaeger at the Ft.
